Here are the most important aspects to look for in a shoe when buying one. Regardless if it is running shoes, walking shoes or shoes for work.

Here are the most important aspects to look for in a shoe when buying one. Regardless if it is running shoes, walking shoes or shoes for work.

  • Shoe should only bend where your foot bends (at the joint of the big toe).
  • Shoe should resist being twisted.
  • The heel counter should be fully enclosed, high and firm.
  • The toe box region should be deep and roomy.
  • The shoe should be a thumb width longer than the longest toe.
  • The shoe should be able to be fastened to the foot by a buckle, belt, strap, elastic or laces.
  • If a heel is present it should not be higher than 2.5cm.
  • The shape of the shoe should match the foot (curved last for a curved foot). If the shape of the shoe does not match the foot, the shoe will be uncomfortable.
  • The mid sole of the shoe should be solid / firm yet shock absorbing.
  •  Try the shoes on before buying them. Take a few running steps in them. They should feel comfortable right away.
  • There is no one perfect model of shoes. Different shoes work for different people. If someone tells you that they have the best shoes ever made, don’t believe that person. The shoes may be perfect for that person but they may not be right at all for you.
  • Many times when you go to a shoe store, the dealer may try to convince you that the expensive shoes are the ones you should get. Get what feels best. Many times, this means a mid-priced shoe.
  •  If you don’t plan on spending some money, you will buy an inferior pair of shoes that will end up breaking down very quickly or giving inadequate support and cushioning.
  • Try different model shoes and see if you can find shoes that feel better.
  • If one brand of shoes doesn’t feel just right, don’t be afraid to try a different brand.
  • Look past style. Some shoes you like maybe very basic, down to earth shoes. Just because a pair of shoes looks good doesn’t mean it will perform good. Choosing good shoes is an important step in avoiding foot pain. The functions that a good shoe should perform is; 1 support and 2 protection. So buying shoes is an art in itself which will give you comfort in the days to come.
