Shrouded House – Toorak Melbourne
This home is located in Toorak, one of Melbourne’s most prestigious neighborhoods. It was designed by Inarc Architects with interiors and furnishings by Allison Pye Interiors. In total the house boasts 13 rooms, a 9,150 square foot main house, 3,330 square foot basement, and a 753 square foot cabana. The home gives off a contemporary sculptural presence with materials such as bronze, steel, and glass incorporated into its design. The design takes “the effective screening of the slightly twisting and turning exterior from the adjoining properties and the street by bronze aluminum battens. Used throughout the exterior, the battens give the structure its homogenous coloring and its sense of lightness”. The interior of the home is open and warm using white, sandstone and oak surfaces to link the spaces.

The construction of the home uses rigid timber veneer walls and truss arches resulting in almost no right angled walls. It features spacious living, dining, and kitchen areas, along with a guest room, and a special room suitable for displaying a car. The bathroom boasts a round tub and one of the best views from the house, overlooking the ocean. The home also has a central courtyard functioning as an outdoor living room with water flowing through it to create a pond.
The Pit House – Okayama Japan
This home was designed by the 38-year-old Hiroshima born and based architect Keisuke Maeda. The unique space has an observatory quality to it, and is beautiful by both day and night. The design offers “a startling steel-structured 138 square-meter (1487 sq.ft.) ‘cave’ that was built into the hillside site, yet it allows the residents 360-degree views of the surrounding area and its buildings”. Although much of the structure of the home is underground the interiors are filled with light and openness, contained by beautiful curving walls. In order to achieve this the above surface part of the structure was mounted “on 50 branch-like poles, creating a surround skylight for the amphitheater inside”.
