Like Madonna and Angelina Jolie now pop star Sir Elton John wants to adopt a child. Elton John and partner David Furnish want to adopt a 14 month old Ukrainian toddler named Lev. They met Lev during an orphanage tour there over the weekend, where John performed for the children-as part of his AIDS Foundation work. But Elton John’s hopes of becoming a father were dashed last night when Ukraine Family Minister Yuriy Pavlenko declared that gay couples were judged not suitable to adopt children under the country’s law. Mr. Pavlenko also said that the age gap between the adoptive parents and the child must not be more than 45 years. Mr. Pavlenko went on to say that the adoptive parents must be married Ukraine does not recognize homosexual partnerships. Attempts to change this could lead to backlash from the Catholic and Orthodox churches in Ukraine.
Despite the government’s negative attitude Sir Elton John received support from the orphanage in Makeyevka.
“We liked Elton when he was visiting our orphanage, he was very impressive indeed, and in theory if he wanted to adopt one of our children, we would be happy, even though I doubt it will be possible,” said spokesman Viktor Goncharov.
