As Relaxnews celebrates the 50th anniversary of the James Bond film franchise, celebrity stylist Andre Austin explains the significance of 007 in the world of fashion as well as offering his tips on any aspiring Bonds planning to channel current Bond Daniel Craig this season.
Andre Austin has no hesitation when it comes to naming the greatest style influencer from any Bond movie over the past 50 years, praising breakthrough 007 Sean Connery for his sartorial choices back in the 1960s.
"Connery set the bar really high with his classic sophistication and well manicured suiting. I believe he set the tone for the modern day man," Austin told Relaxnews. "I have thought long and hard about James Bond‘s secret to looking sharp…and the one word is tailoring — a well-tailored suit, whether it’s made to measure from Ralph Lauren or custom-made from Tom Ford. Fit is everything."
While Ford may be the man behind Daniel Craig‘s attire in upcoming picture Skyfall, London tailor Anthony Sinclair is in fact the label behind the iconic Conduit Cut, made famous by Sean Connery in the original James Bond films, and gentlemen looking to evoke the Bond aesthetic can make a rendezvous there for a bespoke tuxedo. US-based Austin argues that a trip to Bond’s native Britain needn’t be necessary though.
"Try your local haberdashery. Stores like H. Herzfeld, Rothman’s in New York and international chain Brooks Brothers can get you looking Bond-esque in no time," explains the stylist, adding that it’s easy to update one of the classic styles seen in films such as Dr. No, Goldfinger and Diamonds Are Forever in just a few steps.
"For a modern-day James Bond I would include different fabric choices/textures and pattern. I love the idea of adding leather to suiting arms/lapels/ back panels," he says. "Pattern wise I love the mix of plaid/paisley/polka dot shirt tie combos — a real modern approach to men’s dressing." Austin also emphasizes the importance of accessorizing, reminding aspiring Bonds that their "essential 007 accessories check list" should include a briefcase, sunglasses, cuff links, driving gloves and a lighter.
However, one area where the fashion expert argues gentlemen should be more wary is when recreating Daniel Craig‘s famous beach body in Casino Royale — notably when the actor emerged from the sea sporting a tight-fitting pair of pale blue trunks by luxury label La Perla.
"This is when it gets real tricky. It’s just not a look many can pull off and unless you look like Daniel Craig don’t do it," warns Austin. "My advice is to opt for a loose-fitting square cut shape which is a more attractive look for most men in addition to having a slightly more masculine feel."
