Skyfall won Outstanding British Film at the BAFTAs last night – the first major award for the 007 franchise since 1963 when it received a cinematography nod for From Russia With Love. It is the UK’s most successful film in British box office history, having made more than £620 million internationally.
The evening’s other big winner was Ben Affleck who won Best Director and Best Film for Argo, beating off stiff competition from Les Misérables, Life Of Pi, Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty. Amour star Emmanuelle Riva won Best Leading Actress and Daniel Day-Lewis won Best Leading Actor for Lincoln. Anne Hathaway gave a very tearful speech as she collected her Best Supporting Actress award from George Clooney (who she very nearly forgot to hug on the way), while Christophe Waltz took home Best Supporting Actor for Django Unchained.
Jacqueline Durran‘s lavish Anna Karenina costumes topped the Best Costumes category; Life Of Pi won Best Cinematography; and Silver Linings Playbook Best Adapted Screenplay. Juno Temple received the 2013 Rising Star award, which was voted for by the public, thanking her brother for persuading everyone in his school to vote her.
The night’s other talking points? Helen Mirren‘s new pink hairstyle caused a scrum on the red carpet; poor Eddie Redmayne was forced to duck out of attending the ceremony after contracting food poisoning; and then, not to be too British about it, but the bleak weather.
A flurry of snow and on-going rain turned the red carpet into a squelching pathway, causing many of tonight’s leading actresses to huddle together for warmth. We spotted Anne Hathaway selflessly hand over her coat to Andrea Riseborough to stop her shivering and Ben Affleck and George Clooney formed an army of two under a BAFTA umbrella to prevent their much-talked about beards from getting wet. – Vogue
